Michael Whitaker Smith (born October 7, 1957) is a renowned American musician who has made a mark in both contemporary Christian and mainstream charts. His biggest breakthrough in mainstream music came in 1991 with "Place in This World," which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Throughout his illustrious career, Smith has sold more than 18 million albums, earning him widespread recognition.
Smith is a three-time Grammy Award winner, a recipient of the American Music Award, and has earned an impressive 45 Dove Awards. In 1999, ASCAP recognized him with the "Golden Note" Award for his lifetime achievement in songwriting. In 2014, he was honored as the "cornerstone of Christian music" for his significant influence on the genre. Smith has also recorded 31 No. 1 hit songs, with fourteen gold and five platinum albums to his name.
Apart from making music, Smith has also starred in two films and authored 14 books, including This Is Your Time, which he co-wrote with Christian author Gary Thomas.
